🇺🇸 Interesting Facts About President’s Day - Monday Feb 16

  • President’s Day isn’t its official name. Federally, the holiday is still called Washington’s Birthday, honoring George Washington’s Feb. 22 birthday.

  • It always falls on a Monday. The holiday was moved in 1971 to create a long weekend under the Uniform Monday Holiday Act.

  • Only Washington is officially honored. Abraham Lincoln is often included in popular observance, but he is not named in federal law.

  • No president was actually born on President’s Day. The date is always between Feb. 15–21.

  • State observances vary. Some states honor multiple presidents, while others celebrate Washington alone.

  • It’s one of the biggest retail weekends of the year, though the holiday’s original purpose was civic remembrance.

The Ellington Penguin Plunge is set for Saturday, February 28, 2026, bringing community spirit and chilly fun to Crystal Lake.

Hosted by the Town of Ellington with support from local police and resident state troopers, the event invites participants to take a daring winter plunge to benefit worthy causes and raise community awareness.

Registration begins at 10:30 AM, with plungers braving the cold waters shortly after. Whether you plan to jump or cheer from the shore, this annual tradition is a spirited highlight of the winter season.
